I am a resident of Valdosta, a place that I have grown to love for its charm, wonderful community, and natural beauty. Recently, however, I have become deeply concerned about the prospect of data centers being established in our town. Data centers, while a growing part of our digital world, come with significant drawbacks that are at odds with the values and quality of life we cherish.

One of the most pressing concerns is their notorious high water and energy consumption. A typical data center can consume as much electricity as a small town and use millions of gallons of water annually to cool the servers. In a world where environmental conservation is paramount, the impact of such massive resource consumption is frankly unsustainable. Further, with Valdosta and its surrounding regions occasionally experiencing droughts, the introduction of a high water demand industry would only exacerbate water scarcity. We are aware of proposed closed loop systems. Even those are not always "closed" and still need to be topped off with water. Consider as well all the chemicals used to keep them operational that need to be dealt with. Our water management plant cannot deal with those chemicals. So, what happens to the chemical waste?

Moreover, data centers often generate significant amounts of electronic waste, and the infrastructure needed for their operation can alter local landscapes, disrupting both human and wildlife habitats. Valdosta's rich natural landscapes and diverse ecosystems make it a sanctuary for both residents and wildlife. We mustn't compromise these treasures for corporate interests.

From an economic perspective, while the introduction of data centers might promise job opportunities, these are usually low in number and highly specialized, meaning they may not significantly benefit our local workforce. Furthermore, the long-term costs associated with environmental degradation and resource depletion would outweigh any short-term economic gains.

Finally, the noise pollution and the potential increase in traffic due to construction and operation logistics could degrade the peaceful atmosphere that defines Valdosta. Our community’s health, tranquility, and sustainability should not be compromised for the sake of accommodating data centers.

We urge relevant authorities and stakeholders to reconsider any plans related to setting up data centers in Valdosta/ Lowndes County. We ask for comprehensive environmental impact assessments and meaningful community consultations before proceeding with any such projects.
