The Issue

Arizona residents are facing an urgent crisis that hits close to home. As a proud Arizonan, I am deeply concerned about the construction boom of data centers in our state. Given Arizona's position as one of the top 10 states for hosting the most data centers, we are witnessing an alarming trend that clashes with our environmental reality. Our beautiful state, known for its stunning desert landscapes, faces a serious challenge with water scarcity, yet the data centers being built require colossal amounts of water to operate efficiently—mainly for cooling purposes.

The strain these facilities put on our already limited water resources is undeniable. Reports indicate that a single, large data center can consume hundreds of thousands of gallons of water each day, exacerbating Arizona's drought issues. This scenario becomes even more concerning when every drop counts toward sustaining not just our communities, but also our fragile ecosystems.

Moreover, everyday citizens are bearing the brunt of these constructions financially. Our water bills have surged, adding additional stress to families already managing tight budgets. Increased energy demands from these centers not only elevate costs but also affect our carbon footprint, contributing to the broader issues of climate change. We must acknowledge the full environmental cost of these projects at a time when Arizona should be looking for ways to conserve resources, not deplete them.

We call on our local government, policy makers, and industry leaders to prioritize sustainable development practices that benefit our communities instead of infringing upon them. This includes considering alternative cooling technologies that do not heavily rely on water resources, promoting the use of renewable energy, and halting further approvals for new data centers unless stringent conservation measures are put in place.

Let's demand accountability and eco-friendly practices in our infrastructure developments. By signing this petition, you are voicing your concern for sustainable living in Arizona and advocating for responsible growth that respects our natural resources and secures a livable future for all residents. Please sign and share this petition to help halt the unchecked construction of data centers in Arizona.
