The Issue
Living in Regina, Saskatchewan, I'm deeply concerned about the proposal to build an AI data center in or around our community. This project threatens to significantly alter the way we live, work, and interact with our environment, leading to adverse effects on our health and wellbeing. Our quaint city, known for its beautiful green spaces and vibrant community, would face unwanted challenges such as increased power bills, pollution, noise, and strain on our water resources.
A new data center could notably rise our electricity costs as these facilities are known to consume enormous amounts of energy. Estimates suggest that data centers can use up to 3% of the global electricity supply, contributing to rising bills and financial stress for the residents of Regina. Furthermore, the run-off heat from the operations will likely lead to increased air pollution, diminishing the air quality we have worked hard to maintain.
The environmental ramifications extend to noise and light pollution as well. These disturbances can disrupt wildlife habitats and our daily lives. Residents who have lived peacefully in Regina enjoy the quiet and serene environment, something that is put at risk with the operation of an industrial-level facility.
Additionally, data centers utilize vast amounts of water for cooling purposes, and unlike in other regions, Regina's water resources are not readily recyclable. Discharging untreated water back into the environment could cause long-term ecological damage, impacting the local flora and fauna, as well as the general health of the population.
Bearing these considerations in mind, we must not allow the construction of this facility without exploring alternatives and researching sustainable options that will not harm our community. Let's preserve our environment, our health, and our way of life.
I urge the local authorities, planning committees, and all stakeholders involved to reconsider this decision and prioritize the welfare of Regina’s people and environment over industrial development.
Please join me in fighting against the construction of the AI data center near Regina by signing this petition. Together, we can protect our community and ensure a healthier future for all its residents.
