The Issue

As someone who frequently visits Ascarate Park with my friends and family, I am deeply concerned about the plans to build a skate park at this cherished recreational area. Ascarate Park holds a special place in the hearts of many El Paso residents, offering a serene and inviting space for families to gather, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Introducing a skate park could disrupt the peaceful atmosphere and alter the intended family-friendly environment.

It's crucial to note that Ascarate Park is one of the few remaining green spaces in our community where families can bond, children can play freely, and individuals can find solace away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The addition of a skate park may not only lead to increased noise levels but could also divert resources and attention from maintaining the park's current facilities.

Furthermore, studies have shown that the presence of skate parks can sometimes lead to increased littering and vandalism, affecting the integrity and cleanliness of public areas (as reported by the Trust for Public Land). Communities that have implemented skate parks often report a significant rise in maintenance costs, which may eventually impact local taxpayers.

There are numerous other locations within El Paso that could be considered for the construction of a skate park. Choosing a more appropriate area that doesn’t disrupt existing park-goers' activities, such as vacant lots or underutilized urban areas, would be a more suitable solution for accommodating the skateboarding enthusiasts without compromising the tranquility of Ascarate Park.

Let's prioritize preserving our community's cherished green spaces. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the continuation of Ascarate Park as a peaceful retreat for all. We urge the city planners and local authorities to reconsider this decision and find a more appropriate location for the skate park within El Paso.

Please join us in protecting the integrity and serenity of Ascarate Park by signing this petition today.
