Stop the construction of a homeless shelter in Far Rockaway, NY
The Issue
I'm reaching out with a deep concern that affects our community right here in Far Rockaway, specifically on Brunswick Avenue. The plan to build a homeless shelter in our neighborhood has caused distress among residents, and I believe it's time to voice our collective objections.
Far Rockaway is home to numerous families and children, all of whom strive to maintain a sense of safety and community. The introduction of a homeless shelter on our street could threaten the peace we've worked hard to build. Our area already grapples with a level of crime that we are committed to addressing for the betterment of our children and our future. Adding a shelter, which often becomes a magnet for more crime and safety issues, would exacerbate the situation rather than improve it.
It’s essential to be clear—this is not a stance taken against the homeless, who indeed need support and resources to build a better life. Instead, it’s about finding a solution that suits the needs of both the people who are presently without homes and those living in Far Rockaway. We are advocating for solutions that do not threaten our neighborhood's security and well-being.
We propose exploring alternative sites for the shelter, ones that are perhaps better suited and safer for all involved parties. Another solution would be increasing preventive measures and support systems that specifically address the root causes of homelessness and offer real pathways for rehabilitation and integration.
Let’s urge local authorities to reconsider this plan, and work with us to find a resolution that benefits both our community and those in need of shelter, without compromising the security of the families living here.
Please join me in opposing this construction and prioritizing the safety and well-being of all residents in Far Rockaway. We need your support to ensure our voice is heard. Sign this petition to stop the construction of the homeless shelter on Brunswick Avenue.
