The Issue

Growing up in the beautiful county of Kent, I've always cherished the lush green fields and the serene countryside that make this place home. The tranquility and natural beauty are irreplaceable. However, this cherished land is now at risk. A planning application has been submitted for a major data centre development on land between Pratts Bottom Farm and Green Street Green.

Kent is already grappling with significant challenges regarding water supply. The region is already under immense pressure, with a hosepipe ban in place since June.  Introducing a massive data centre into this fragile ecosystem will only exacerbate these issues. Data centres are known for their enormous water consumption, used primarily for cooling purposes. In times where conservation should be a priority, it's crucial to question the wisdom of such developments.

Moreover, the health implications are unsettling. Studies have shown that the operation of data centres can result in increased levels of pollution and noise, affecting the wellbeing of nearby residents. This is particularly concerning for families and individuals who have chosen to live in Kent for its clean environment and peaceful living. The installation of industrial facilities in the countryside is at odds with the health and environmental standards we expect from our community leaders.

Additionally, the continuous conversion of our cherished countryside into development lands threatens the very essence of what makes Kent special. With numerous housing developments already proposed for villages around the area, the cumulative impact on our landscape and wildlife cannot be ignored. The countryside offers not just an escape, but is an essential habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna, which must be preserved for future generations.

I urge local authorities to reconsider this development plan and explore alternative locations for the data centre. Areas specifically zoned for industrial uses, well away from residential and environmentally sensitive regions, should be prioritized to prevent the adverse effects on our cherished countryside.

By signing this petition, you're standing up for the preservation of Kent's natural beauty, the health of its residents, and the sustainability of its resources. Let’s make our voices heard and protect our home for ourselves and the generations to come. Please sign this petition to oppose the construction of the data centre near Orpington.
