Stop the construction of a data center in Santaquin
The Issue
I moved to Santaquin to secure a safe environment for my family, away from the dangers of polluted urban settings. Like many residents, I cherish the fresh clean air, the tight-knit community, and the peaceful surroundings that Santaquin provides. However, the recent decision by the city to approve and rezone land for a data center development threatens to compromise this safe haven.
The construction and operation of a data center come with significant environmental risks. As someone deeply concerned about my children’s health, I am alarmed by reports indicating potential cancer-causing pollutants from the release of hazardous emissions associated with such facilities. With parts of the publicly released information being heavily redacted, there is an evident need for transparency and accountability from the authorities.
In 2010, a study from Stanford University revealed that data centers are responsible for about 1.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions—a number that has surely increased in this digital age. Moreover, these facilities tend to consume massive amounts of electricity and water, placing further strain on local resources and potentially contributing to environmental degradation. Is this the future we want for Santaquin?
By supporting this petition, we urge the city council of Santaquin to reconsider their decision and halt the current plans for the data center. We demand a thorough environmental impact assessment, complete with full and unredacted public disclosure, to be carried out. The health of our children and the preservation of our environment must take precedence over industrial and commercial interests.
Let's protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the community we love. Your signature can make a difference. Sign this petition to advocate for the health and well-being of all Santaquin residents.
