Living in the heart of the Conshohocken/Plymouth area most of my life, it has always been a place where community and family go hand in hand. I chose to stay in this region for its community strength, the commitment to open space, and close-knit neighborhoods that feel like family. However, the proposed data center development on 900 Conshohocken Rd threatens to disrupt this delicate balance, and it's time we take a stand to preserve the essence of our community.

Data centers, though crucial for technological advancements, are rarely compatible with residential neighborhoods like ours. Such a facility brings not only the constant hum of machinery but also frequent heavy truck traffic, which increases noise and air pollution. Moreover, data centers consume a tremendous amount of energy, potentially leading to increased utility costs and strain on our local infrastructure. According to data from the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers collectively account for approximately 2% of the country's total electricity use. Locating one next to a residential area increases the risk of grid reliability issues and environmental hazards.

Our zoning regulations are outdated and do not accommodate for such large-scale industrial projects next to residential zones. The community spirit and respect for the environment that characterizes Plymouth Township, along with neighboring areas like Whitemarsh, Conshohocken, Norristown, West Conshohocken, and Upper Merion, are under threat. This data center proposal is a glaring misalignment with our community’s needs and the zoning standards we rely on to protect residential areas from data center encroachment.

Rather than disrupting our neighborhood with this ill-suited project, we should explore sustainable alternatives that align with our community’s values. Utilizing existing commercial zones to lift this residential area and build upon the successful businesses and recreational resources already there would be a more balanced approach. It’s essential to advocate for updates to our zoning laws that reflect modern developments while safeguarding our neighborhoods' character.

We urge the responsible authorities to reject the proposed data center plan and engage in a comprehensive review of this area to better reflect our community's development philosophy. Raising our voices collectively can lead to sustainable development that respects our homes and communities.
