Stop the construction of a data center in Liberty, Missouri
The Issue
When I first heard about the proposal to build a data center in Liberty, Missouri, my heart sank. I've lived here for many years, raising my family in this beautiful community surrounded by nature and peace. These proposed data centers threaten to disrupt everything we hold dear in this area. They bring with them enormous environmental concerns, using up tons of electricity and unimaginable amounts of water.
Globally, data centers are known to consume an estimated 1% of the world's electricity. That might not sound like much, but to put it into perspective, that is around 200 terawatt-hours, which equates to the electricity consumed by some medium-sized countries! Additionally, these facilities require vast amounts of water for cooling purposes - some estimates suggest that a single data center can use as much water as a small city.
Beyond these staggering numbers are the local impacts. Liberty, Missouri, is a community founded on principles of sustainability and respect for natural resources. Allowing a vast data center to set up here would strain our local resources, increase our carbon footprint, and disrupt the wildlife and ecosystems that are already delicate.
Moreover, there's an economic debate involved. While some argue data centers could create jobs, the reality is these positions are often limited, short-lived in terms of construction, and few permanent roles post-construction. Our community stands to lose more in environmental degradation and depletion of resources than these potential gains can provide.
I worry deeply about the future we are setting up for our children, not just in Liberty but across the globe. By allowing data centers like these to sprout up without stringent renewable energy commitments and responsible water usage plans might undermine efforts to combat climate change and sustainable growth.
I urge our local leaders to listen to the community, reconsider this project, and protect the environment and resources of Liberty. Let's seek more sustainable avenues for growth and technological advancements that align with our community's values.
Please join me in opposing this project by signing this petition. Together, we can take a stand for our beautiful Liberty and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
