The Issue

Cellular devices are essential in today's society. Phones help us keep in contact with each other and allow us to look up information that we need. We, the students of Francis Lewis High School, object to the policy concerning our devices being confiscated in the hallways this coming Monday.

Also, as long as students are not disrupting class or others, simply having a phone in the hallway should be allowed, as students may be using it to check important information, like schedules, assignments, or transportation updates (Which is important as we live in NYC, where many of us students rely on public transportation). Taking phones away can also create a distrustful environment where students feel that their privacy and autonomy are restricted.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request a reconsideration of the current policy allowing the confiscation of students’ phones in the hallways. We believe that confiscating phones can create conflicts between students and staff, particularly when students feel that their rights are being infringed upon. This approach often escalates minor issues related to phone use, which distracts from the primary purpose of our school: fostering a safe and productive learning environment.

By confiscating phones, unnecessary friction is introduced into the school environment, which may lead to greater disruption than allowing responsible phone use during non-class times. We believe that our school can achieve a more harmonious and respectful environment by implementing a policy that balances the need for discipline with respect for students’ autonomy and property.

We urge the administration to consider alternative policies that foster responsible technology use while maintaining mutual respect and reducing unnecessary disruptions.
