Stop The Closure Of The Men’s Unit in Fort Smith NWT

Stop The Closure Of The Men’s Unit in Fort Smith NWT
The Issue
The potential closure of the Fort Smith Correctional Centre-male unit disrupts the lives of many dedicated staff members and their families who have built their lives around this facility. The FSCC-Men’s Unit plays a crucial role in our community by providing essential rehabilitation services and maintaining public safety. With the proposal from GNWT to repurposing the Men’s Unit into a wellness center is a duplication of a service that the town and local band provides and manages, as Salt-River First Nation and the Fort Smith Hospital currently operate them. Closure of our facility will negatively impact local businesses who have provided a service to the male unit and with closure they will lose a significant annual income. Without FSCC male unit our community will lose 2.7 million dollars in salary earnings that our economy thrives on. The potential impacts are profound, and it is crucial that we address these issues thoughtfully and comprehensively along with our leaders to ensure that the changes made are in the best interest of our community. Please sign this petition to help keep the FSCC-Men’s Unit open and support our community's stability and safety.
