The Kroschel Wildlife Center in Haines, Alaska, is a vital educational and rehabilitation facility for Alaskan wildlife. It serves the community and its visitors by offering insight into the natural lives of creatures within the state, providing support for rehabilitation, and educating the public on issues of wildlife conservation. We are appealing to Governor Dunleavy and President Trump to stop the continued closure of this critical facility and immediately order the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to stop plans to euthanize or relocate the animals.

The Kroschel Wildlife Center has been in operation for nearly three decades and has provided vital support in the managing of native wildlife species, contributing positively to their conservation. Alaska Public Media reported that the center has cared for and sheltered various Alaskan animals, ranging from wolverines to grizzly bears. Some of the centers current residents include Jasper the wolverine, Duck Moses the moose, Kitty the grizzly bear, and Ukpik the snowy owl. 

Closing the center disrupts the conservation efforts being carried out and hinders the crucial exposure and education the public receives about Alaskan wildlife and its importance. Engaging with these animals helps humans appreciate these creatures, fostering a healthier and more respectful relationship between us and nature. 

On January 17, 2025, the USDA reinstated the center's federal license. However, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has refused to grant the state license and is planning to seize/euthanize the animals. Seizing and placing imprinted animals, many of them old, in some unfamiliar place with strangers they are not familiar with instead of letting them remain in their home under the care of Steve Kroschel, will be even worse than euthanization! Many could die during relocation. What the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is intending to do, is NOT in the best interests of these imprinted magnificent creatures.

We call upon Governor Dunleavy of Alaska and President Trump of the USA: Please consider the significant ecological and educational role the Kroschel Wildlife Center plays and take necessary action to ensure that this vital facility can continue its significant work. Most importantly, please take immediate action with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to prevent these animals from being taken from their home and potentially murdered.
