Stop the closure of Texas Medical Center Commons

Stop the closure of Texas Medical Center Commons
The Issue
The Texas Medical Center commons has been a cornerstone of our community for many years. Serving as a gathering place, it has provided comfort and nourishment to countless medical professionals, students, and families of patients. As someone who has spent numerous breaks unwinding and refueling in this vital space, I am devastated to learn of its impending closure at the end of the year. Where are we supposed to eat and find a moment of respite during our demanding shifts?
Not only is the commons a convenience, but it is also a family. The staff members have become more than friends to many of us; they have become a second family. The news of the closure doesn’t only affect us; it impacts the dedicated staff members who have made the commons such a special place for us all. Many of them, known to us for years, now face job loss.
The Texas Medical Center, being one of the largest medical complexes globally, sees heavy foot traffic from healthcare professionals, students, and visitors daily. Without the Commons, an essential facility is stripped away from those who need it most. Not having a place to decompress, relax, and eat during shifts not only stresses the well-being of the workers but can negatively impact their performance in providing patient care.
Moreover, the loss of jobs for these loyal employees is a further blow. Many staff members who contribute significantly to the hospitable environment at the commons will find themselves unemployed without this vital service.
We urge the Texas Medical Center's administration to reconsider this decision. We implore them to keep the commons open or at least ensure the continuity of food services and job security for the staff affected by this closure. It's critical that we maintain these essential services not only for those who work tirelessly to save lives but also for their emotional and mental well-being.
Please sign this petition to prevent the closure of the Texas Medical Center Commons and to support the workers and community that rely on this important resource. Let’s stand together to keep our community thriving.
