As the city pushes forward with plans to close St. Johns and Peninsula Park Community Centers, and with Columbia and Pier Pools already shut down, a glaring contradiction has come to light:
Portland has committed $15 million to build a brand-new skatepark—on the west side.
While North Portland families are losing basic access to recreation, childcare, swim lessons, and safe public gathering spaces, a fully funded and fast-tracked skatepark is being celebrated across the river.
This isn’t about whether skateparks are good or bad. It’s about who gets new investments—and who keeps getting cut. The city has made it clear: there is money. Just not for us.
We need to keep the pressure on.
