Stop the closure of Lloyds and Halifax in Havant town centre

Stop the closure of Lloyds and Halifax in Havant town centre
The Issue
The impending closure of both Lloyds and Halifax banks in Havant town centre is truly heartbreaking for our community. This decision is not just an inconvenience; it presents a significant challenge for many, particularly the elderly, vulnerable individuals, local businesses, and charities who rely heavily on access to these banking services and, importantly, cash.
Losing these branches will result in significant job losses for local residents employed by the bank and building society, further impacting the local economy. The vitality of West Street, where these banks are located, is at risk. With the loss of these banks, many shops and businesses, already struggling, will see a sharp decline in foot traffic, which could be devastating for their survival.
If these banks close, Havant, Hayling, Emsworth, Bedhampton and LeighPark with a population of approximately 90,000, will be left with only one bank. This is simply untenable. Currently, the banks provide excellent accessibility with disability parking and entrances that accommodate disabled customers. This essential feature will be lost, forcing those with mobility issues to travel to the nearest branch in Cosham High Street, where opening hours are limited. This will also likely lead to long queues at the Lloyds Cosham branch, causing significant inconvenience for all. Businesses will have to deposit their cash at the Post office, walking in the dark through the park where it is not always safe.
Access to cash is crucial, especially in a deprived area like Havant, where many residents still depend on cash transactions. Limiting this access would disproportionately affect our most vulnerable residents. It's essential that at least one of these branches remains to ensure that the needs of our community are met.
We urge Lloyds and Halifax to reconsider this decision and acknowledge the profound impact these closures would have on Havant town centre. Keeping one of these branches open is not just a matter of convenience; it's a necessity for maintaining the economic and social health of our community.
Please sign this petition to show your support for keeping at least one of these vital banking services open in Havant town centre. Together, let's make our voices heard and protect the interests of our community.
