The Issue

I am a resident of Terre Haute, IN, living in a rural area where our local elementary school Hoosier Prairie is set to close. This isn’t just any school; it’s the only one that serves our community. It’s where my children, and many others, begin their educational journeys, where they make friends, learn new things, and become part of a community bigger than themselves.

Hoosier Prairie Elementary School was opened in 1979 to serve families in the southernmost part of Vigo County. Generations of families have gone to this school and have returned to serve on the PTA or even work there. Small class sizes have made this school a great place for learning and children feeling like they matter in this big world. Caring teachers, who take time to help each and every child in their class learn and feel welcome, educational assistants who help care for our special needs children, and even support staff who know all of our children by name are now unsure of what the future holds for them.

Closing this school will create significant hardships for families like mine. With the next nearest school miles away, parents will face logistical challenges just to get their children to school safely each day. Not everyone has flexible work arrangements to accommodate these changes.

Additionally, this closure threatens the very fabric of our community. Schools are not just places of learning; they are community hubs where families gather, support one another, and cultivate strong ties. Shuttering our elementary school could lead to further population decline as families might choose to leave for areas with more accessible education options, ultimately impacting the local economy severely.

Evidence shows that the closure of rural schools significantly affects educational outcomes. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, students in rural areas already face barriers such as higher dropout rates compared to their urban counterparts. Taking away their local school exacerbates these issues, making it more challenging for rural students to succeed.

I urge the local educational authorities in Terre Haute to reconsider this decision or explore alternative solutions closer to our rural families.

Please join me in calling upon the school board and local government officials to keep our rural school operational and maintain the heart of our community. Sign this petition to support families and children in Terre Haute, ensuring they have the right to convenient and meaningful education. Your signature will send a strong signal that our rural schools are vital and worth preserving.
