Stop the closure of Glasgow day centres
The Issue
My mother has Alzheimer's, a challenging and heart-wrenching condition, and her twice-weekly visits to the Budhill Day Centre have been a beacon of hope for both her and our family. Each visit offers her a vital opportunity to socialise with peers, keeping her mind engaged and active. It's not just a place where she spends time but an integral part of her therapy and well-being. However, a recent proposal intends to reduce the number of day centres in Glasgow from ten to just four, threatening this essential lifeline for countless families like mine.
Day centres provide a safe and nurturing environment for individuals with cognitive conditions, physical disabilities, and other needs. Beyond merely offering a space for social interaction, these centres are equipped with trained staff who provide crucial support services that significantly enhance the quality of life for their users. For families, day centres also offer much-needed respite, allowing them some essential time to recharge while knowing their loved ones are in good hands.
According to data from Age Scotland, there are over 90,000 people living with dementia in Scotland, with the numbers rising annually. These facilities are not just an option; they are a necessity to meet the needs of our aging population. Reducing their availability is not only harmful to the individuals attending but also puts undue pressure on the NHS and social services, which could ultimately lead to higher costs in healthcare and social care.
What we need is a commitment from Glasgow City Council to preserve these vital services and explore ways to enhance their capacity and outreach. Instead of cutting back, the council should consider alternative solutions such as reallocating budget resources, engaging in community fundraising initiatives, or even forming partnerships with local businesses that are interested in supporting community health and wellness.
Please join me in urging the Glasgow City Council to abandon this plan and ensure that adequate and accessible day centre services continue to be available throughout the city. By signing this petition, you stand with families like mine who rely on these services to improve the quality of life for our loved ones. Let’s work together to safeguard the dignity and well-being of our city's most vulnerable residents. Sign this petition today and help us make a difference.
