The Issue

Lambeth is facing a significant crisis that affects not just those directly involved, but all of us. The Central Hill Adult Care Centre, a lifeline for families across the borough, is at risk of closing its doors with the loss of 10 members of staff who specialise in dementia care.

This isn’t just a building; it’s a sanctuary for those living with dementia, a place of comfort and stability in a world that can be confusing and isolating.

The services provided by the Central Hill Adult Care Centre are invaluable to our community. It offers a dedicated space for care and support, drastically improving the quality of life for our affected loved ones and providing much-needed respite for their families. The centre staff are professionals who understand the unique challenges that dementia presents and offer specialized services that cannot be easily replicated elsewhere.

Lambeth Council says that the number of people using the service has declined by 50% since 2020.

We do not accept that this is beacuse there is no need for this service, but reflects a failure of the Council in referring people in need appropriately. We do not accept that this demonstrates reduced demand. Rather, the evidence indicates that people who needed the service were not being referred or were turned away, while dementia prevalence in the borough continues to rise.

In Lambeth, the number of individuals with dementia is steadily increasing—over 2000 people have dementia in the borough and this number is set to increase as the number of people aged over 65 grows.  This service needs to be expanded not reduced.

We urge Lambeth Council to reconsider this decision and work in collaboration with community members and stakeholders to explore alternative solutions.  We can protect this vital resource that is so essential to our community’s wellbeing. It is about caring for our elders and showing compassion and foresight for the  community, ensuring that no ones needs are neglected, now or in the future.

Sign the petition urging Lambeth Council to keep the Central Hill Adult Care Centre open.
