The Issue

My daughter and her peers educational journey is on the brink of an unnecessary turmoil. As a parent, it is heart-wrenching to witness the impending closure/co-location of Paul Robeson High School, a place that has stood as a beacon of learning and community for countless students in Philadelphia. My daughter and her peers are facing an unjust disruption right in their senior year. This is a crucial period for setting their future pathways. This closure threatens not only their immediate educational needs but also their broader aspirations and dreams.

Paul Robeson High School has consistently been a nurturing environment where students thrive academically and socially. The school's commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning space is unmatched, offering programs and support that are rare finds elsewhere. It is not merely a building of education; it is a home away from home for many students. For years, it has played an essential role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow, often arming them with skills and confidence to conquer the world. My brother graduated in 2017. My oldest daughter graduated 2025.

The decision to shutter this institution seems unjustified and fails to consider the immediate impact on the students, faculty, and the wider community. The transition to other schools poses significant challenges, such as increased travel times, overcrowded classrooms, and the loss of valuable teacher-student relationships developed over years. Data shows that disruptions like these can have detrimental effects on student performance and well-being.

We urge the School District of Philadelphia to reconsider this decision. Instead of closure/co-location, let's explore alternative solutions that address any financial or administrative hurdles without compromising our children's education. Invest in Paul Robeson, like Cassidy Elementary school was invested in. Community engagement, transparent decision-making, and exploring financial grants are actionable steps that can keep Paul Robeson High School's doors open.

Our children's education should always be a priority, and maintaining stability is crucial, especially in these pivotal years. Let us come together as a community to protect their right to a consistent and supportive learning environment.

Please join me in imploring the School District of Philadelphia to prioritize the future of our children over short-term financial considerations. Sign this petition, and let’s SAVE Paul Robeson High School so it's open for the generations to come.
