Good afternoon supporters. What is your response to those who question why our community is opposed to this shelter site? Read below for one community member’s thoughts.

“Let's explain the community backlash to the Auburn Boulevard location.  First of all these shelters have been tried by the mayor before and closed because they do not work.  Listen to the City Council Meeting last Tuesday, one of the most vocal homeless advocates in Sacramento did not endorse the site, instead expressed her reservations.  The county supervisors have said that they will not support a shelter in this location.  That means no mental health services, addiction services, etc.  There are homeless in our neighborhood that have been on the street for over 40 years.  The mayor and city council  are not listening or concerned with the needs of this homeless population.  The mayor is only interested in another 50 beds (actually mattresses on the floor).  The third party vendors that the mayor is throwing millions of dollars at have never engaged with the population surrounding this facility.  We cannot find any homeless that are aware that the Auburn Boulevard shelter has been up and running for months or that it even exists.  A few months ago after a number of phone calls and emails, we finally were able to convince one of these third party vendors to make a visit to a gentleman living on the street that was having extreme issues.  They came out said, "oh he needs to be 51/50” and left with no follow-up.  We support the County program just up Watt Avenue, 92 beds with wrap-around services.  The mayor's plan for Auburn Boulevard is to ship problem homeless from the city to county neighborhoods.  "Buckle up it is going to be a bumpy ride."
