The SGA Executive Cabinet has been informed over the last few days that the City of Newark is set to introduce an ordinance that would impose a substantial tax on students residing in Newark. 

The proposed ordinance, if passed by the City Council, would necessitate the University of Delaware to charge each student $50 per semester, for simply residing in Newark, and remit these funds directly to the City of Newark. This imposition not only raises concerns about the financial burden placed on students but also presents the potential for future fee increases without adequate safeguards. College-aged young adults are among the most financially vulnerable populations, and it's disheartening to see the City of Newark attempting to take advantage of this. 

In addition, the city seeks to levy and collect a tax of up to 5% on gross rents or lease payments from all residential and commercial leased premises. This tax would undoubtedly impose significant financial burdens on students who lease apartments or homes, worsening the already challenging economic circumstances many of us face.
