Five years ago today, a tourist helicopter collided with a small private plane, killing nine people and crashing into the Hudson River off of Hoboken. A landing gear was found outside a Stevens Institute of Technology dormitory.
This morning, Mayor Zimmer welcomed Senator Menendez and a bi-state coalition of elected officials and advocates to Hoboken to call for a ban of tourism helicopters from the Hudson River. Joining the event was Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner, who was also representing Congressmen Sires (NJ), a representative for Congressman Jerry Nadler (NY), Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise, Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Romano, Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis, a representative for North Bergen Mayor and State Senator Nicholas Sacco, a representative for Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Guttenberg Mayor Gerald Dracheff, West New York Mayor Felix Roque, Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez, and Brian Wagner from the advocacy group 'Stop the Chop'.
"Helicopter tourism benefits a select few at the expense of everyone who calls this area home," said Mayor Zimmer. "Plus, you don't need a helicopter for a great view of Manhattan - we've got the best views right here along our waterfront.
