This green lot sits right behind my home. My family and neighbors would have to endure the constant noise, heavy traffic, and pollution that come with a 24-hour gas station and drive-through pharmacy precisely steps away. We chose to live in Doral, Miami, due to its serene environment and open green spaces that offer a respite from the bustling city life. But with Cedeco's 41 Site Plan threatening to replace the verdant stretch with concrete and car fumes, our cherished community is under threat.
Developing a gas station and pharmacy might seem convenience-centered, but the potential long-term damage to our environment outweighs these short-term gains. Studies have consistently shown that proximity to gas stations increases residents’ exposure to harmful pollutants like benzene and toluene, which are linked to serious health issues, including cancer and respiratory conditions. Furthermore, extensive traffic congestion will not only increase the pollution levels but also elevate the risk of road incidents around schools, homes, and pedestrian pathways.
The proposed site is currently a natural habitat for local flora and fauna, providing an essential ecological balance and a peaceful escape for the residents. Once destroyed, the ecosystem and our quality of life will never return to their original state. Moreover, this development would set a troubling precedent for approving fuel-reliant infrasstructure over green space in future zone decisions.
Our ask is simple yet impactful: reject the Cedeco 41 Site Plan and instead invest in expanding our green spaces or developing community-centric facilities that promote healthy, eco-friendly living.
