Stop the Cambie Permanent Housing (CPH) in Richmond, BC
The Issue
We are Richmond fathers, mothers, sons, daughters - we have chosen Richmond as our home to live, work, and raise our families because it has historically been a safe community. We have serious and legitimate concerns about the proposal to construct a 6-story ‘Permanent Supportive Housing’ facility, in the heart of Richmond, at Cambie and Sexsmith. With 90 rooms, the CPH project will be one of the largest sites in the province, and is larger than Richmond’s two current Temporary Modular Housing sites combined.
Living close to the Alderbridge Modular Housing site in Richmond, we have seen firsthand what it has done to the Richmond City Centre area over the past 5 years, including constant drug deals, intimidation from drug users, and public substance use in private residences and businesses. In these sites, drug use, and even the selling of drugs, are fully permitted. This has led to public disorder and open drug use spiraling out of control. There is no accountability for the site operators or for the government officials who implemented these projects and promised us that everything would be okay. Over the last 5 years, various levels of government have made many commitments regarding the management and regulation of these sites, but they have not been met. These facilities have become hotspots for open drug use, creating an unsafe environment for residents, especially families with children.
Our primary concern is the lack of proper guidelines and enforcement mechanisms to manage these housing facilities. The current provincial "catch and release" policy leads to a high tolerance for crime, making it difficult for the police to effectively regulate and maintain peace. Without proper laws and enforcement mechanisms, it is hard for us to agree to the establishment of such facilities in Richmond.
It should also be noted that Richmond does not have as severe a homelessness problem as other surrounding cities. Establishing a permanent housing facility in Richmond may attract homeless individuals from other areas, exacerbating rather than solving the problem.
We believe in helping those in need, but the current lack of guidelines, laws, enforcement, accountability, and transparency makes it difficult for us to support the proposed supportive housing project. We ask for your support in signing this petition to express our shared concerns and to seek a solution that benefits everyone.
