During his election campaign and since, Mayor Khan has not only refused to meet with stadium campaigners, but has also overseen the shutting down of local democracy, when our team tried to ask difficult questions. Despite being assured by City Hall that Mayor Khan's 14 day period for new information was genuine, it appears that this was never the case, if we are to believe Wandsworth and Merton GLA representative Leonie Cooper. Our colleagues at Wimbledon Stadium Watch, report that in an email to a local resident which is currently doing the rounds, Ms Cooper (Labour Party) clearly states that, "the Mayor has already decided to hand back the plans to Merton Council for final approval", thus making a complete mockery of the current consultation period. Ms Cooper also repeats the false statement that the previous Mayor Boris Johnson, said that he was wrong to call the decision in. What he actually said in a private conversation was that he "may have made a mistake", which given the context and the actual words spoken is quite different. Meanwhile Merton Council leader Cllr Alambritis, has also repeatedly claimed that the Mayor is going to hand back the plans with approval guaranteed later this month. All the time though the Mayor of London's office insists that Sadiq Khan has not yet made a decision, so how can Cllr Alambritis be so confident ? If you haven't already, please sign our petition.
