The Issue

For decades, I've cherished my home in Butte, Montana, a community that's survived the shadows of one of the world’s largest toxic waste sites, a daunting legacy of our mining history. My family, and I have lived in Butte for four generations, witnessing both its challenges and its resilient spirit. But now, our community is facing yet another challenge: the proposed construction of a new mega 600 acre data center in our backyard.

This data center could have significant negative implications for our community. Already, Butte residents are struggling with soaring property taxes, while the data center, thanks to laws enacted by the state legislature, will contribute almost nothing to these crucial funds. Is it fair for our residents to carry this financial burden while large corporations are given a free pass? The proposed site is destined to exploit our resources without providing commensurate benefits, and this is unacceptable.

Furthermore, Butte's infrastructure currently struggles to support its residents. Utility bills are on the rise and water restrictions are already in place during the summer months—issues that could be exacerbated by the significant demands of a data center. With water usage potentially creating dangerously low levels, the burden it places on our community is too great. Can we risk further straining our water supply for a data center that primarily benefits outside interests?

Consider the environmental concerns inherent in having a data center near a superfund site. The existing environmental challenges should be carefully evaluated before proceeding with new industrial projects. An introduction of such a large-scale development will undeniably impact air quality and noise and could compound our existing environmental challenges.

We call upon local officials to prioritize the wellbeing of Butte residents over the interests of outside corporations. Our community deserves comprehensive evaluations of the socio-economic and environmental impacts of placing such a facility in our town. There are viable options that can be explored, respecting the resources and the heritage of a community that has fought against great environmental odds over the years.

Help us protect Butte. Your voice matters! Please sign this petition to urge our city and state leaders to reconsider the development of this data center in our beloved community.
