The Issue

The proposed construction of an AI data centre on Horsey Lane in Bridgwater poses significant threats to our community and the environment. We urge local authorities and decision-makers to reconsider this plan due to its potential adverse impacts.

Firstly, the proposed data centre will consume an alarming amount of fresh, clean water—estimated between 11 million to 19 million litres per day—required for cooling its systems. This massive water usage puts immense pressure on local resources and significantly affects our access to clean water for everyday use. In communities surrounding similar facilities, residents have experienced contamination in their water supply or have had their water supply reduce to a trickle.

Moreover, the construction and operation of the data centre will inevitably result in substantial noise and light pollution. The continuous hum of machinery, coupled with artificial lighting, will disrupt the tranquility of our surroundings, affecting both residents and wildlife. Such pollution can lead to long-term health issues, including sleep disturbances and stress, which concatenates to affect the overall quality of life.

Furthermore, the establishment of this centre will have detrimental effects on local wildlife. The disruption of natural habitats, coupled with the introduction of pollutants, could drive away or harm native species, reducing the biodiversity that contributes to the balance of our ecosystem.

We acknowledge the need for technological advancements, but it should not come at the expense of our environment, natural resources, and community well-being. We propose alternative solutions such as selecting a less ecologically sensitive area for the site, incorporating advanced, eco-friendly technologies that minimize resource consumption, and implementing strict pollution controls.

By addressing these concerns, we can ensure a more sustainable and considerate approach to technological development in Bridgwater. We urge concerned citizens to support this cause and call on local government officials to halt the current plans and consider the long-lasting impacts on our community and environment.

Please stand with us in safeguarding our community's health, environment, and future. Sign the petition today to voice your opposition to the construction of the AI data centre on Horsey Lane.
