Stop the BLM's harmful wild horse roundups
The Issue
I’ll never forget the heart-wrenching moment I witnessed a stallion, in a desperate fight to preserve his freedom, break his neck in a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) holding pen. That image haunt me today and have solidified my resolve to call for an end to these cruel practices.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is removing wild horses from their natural habitats at an alarming rate, using a method that is not only inhumane but in stark violation of their own guidelines. Helicopter roundups, meant to corral these majestic creatures gently, instead scatter herds at high speeds. This chaos pushes the animals beyond their limits, with young foals, unable to keep pace with their mothers, falling behind. The psychological and physical trauma experienced during these roundups is intolerable and especially when they roundup in the hottest months of the year, July and August, which is foaling time. To force these pregnant mares late into the gestation of the baby foal is inhumane.
Shockingly, there are now more wild horses confined in BLM holding facilities than roaming free on American ranges. These facilities are overcrowded and cost taxpayers millions annually. This practice is unsustainable and unjustifiable, especially as our tax dollars fund the care of horses that should be roaming free.
The BLM's current roundup strategy is not a long-term solution to land management. It's urgent that we shift focus from removal to preservation. Implementing fertility control programs and engaging in better range management practices could effectively control populations without resorting to cruel roundups and long-term holding.
We are calling on BLM to halt all future helicopter roundups immediately. We must prioritize humane alternatives that respect the balance of nature and the welfare of these horses.
