Post wildfire information about surviving Brumbies from the Victorian Government and Government Agencies has been non existent.
Lack of access to areas is causing significant concerns about the welfare of Brumbies, injured Brumbies that are not getting Veterinary treatment and basic needs such as food or water. This is unconscionable and potentially cruel as there may be injured and starving Brumbies who are suffering.
Further, in the absence of any advice about numbers of surviving Brumbies in the Victorian Alps, it is more than shocking that organisations such as Invasive Species Org are lobbying to have any surviving Brumbies shot. Is this because Invasive Species Org wish to take advantage of the Brumbies low numbers post wildlife? This is simply unacceptable and must not be allowed to escalate.
With billions of animals having been lost in the wildfires, its time to take stock and ask ourselves, haven't we lost enough animals?
The Victorian Government stepped in and stopped the roo cull, and must ensure no green light is given for the destruction of our heritage Brumbies. .
Despite reaching out to Premier Andrews, Minister D Ambrosio , RSPCA, J.Symes MP ( who responded by saying that it is not in her portfolio and has sent an internal email to D Ambrosio) and DWELP, pleading for assistance to have Brumbies included in the crisis response, with minimal assistance of feed and water, and assessing injuries, our requests have fallen on deaf ears.
Mark Norman chief scientist has, we believe, made misleading claims about damage by Brumbies at 8 Victorian Parks . ( Herald Sun Saturday 1st Feb John Ferguson)
This is the same scientist condemning Barmah Brumbies with what we believe to be misleading information on numbers .
An examination of Brumby numbers, at The Heritage Centre Parks Vic Nathalia there are 150 Brumbies , whereas numbers in the draft management plan are quoted at 730, a variance of 386% ( keep in mind Mr Norman also stated on Ch 9 news there are 823 Brumbies)
Now Mr Norman if you were in business you’d be asked to leave based on inconsistent data. . No wonder our Parks and management is in such a mess.
We must consistently and loudly seek the passing of a Bill to enact Legislation to protect all Victorian Brumbies and for Brumby Groups to be part of management committees playing a proactive role, not lip service, in the management of Brumbies in all National Parks in Victoria.
We must continue to lobby for accurate numbers counts that will assist in proper and diligent management.
