Stop the Ban on DEI in Kentucky’s Public Schools

The Issue

Every student in Kentucky deserves to feel seen, supported, and valued — no matter their race, background, or identity. But Senate Bill 26, filed by Senator Lindsey Tichenor, would make that harder by banning all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in K-12 public schools.

This bill would strip our schools of the very tools they need to address disparities, foster belonging, and ensure equal opportunity. If passed, schools could no longer employ DEI officers, offer DEI training, or even prioritize inclusive vendors. It would make Kentucky one of the few states in the country to ban these initiatives entirely — not just in higher education, but for children as young as five.

Supporters of the bill claim it’s about "fairness" and treating students as individuals. But we can’t address inequality by pretending it doesn’t exist. DEI programs don’t divide students — they help bridge gaps, create safer classrooms, and reflect the diversity of the real world. Without them, many students of color, LGBTQ+ youth, and those from underrepresented communities will be left without the support they need to thrive.

We cannot let politics silence the real experiences of students and educators across Kentucky. Fayette and Jefferson County school districts — the largest in the state — have refused to comply with earlier anti-DEI pushes for good reason. They know that banning DEI puts vulnerable students at risk.

That’s why we’re calling on the Kentucky General Assembly to reject Senate Bill 26 and any legislation that seeks to erase DEI from our schools. This is about protecting the future of public education, ensuring every child has a fair shot, and standing up for equity — not censorship.

Add your name if you believe Kentucky’s kids deserve schools that celebrate diversity, not punish it.
