Stop the badger culling in Cumbria immediately
The Issue
For over 250,000 years, badgers have been an intrinsic part of the UK’s natural heritage, but today they continue to face relentless persecution. This breaks my heart, especially knowing they are protected by law. Despite the government’s agreement that the cull is ineffective and their decision to finally end it, licenses in Cumbria remain active. It begs the question: If culling doesn't work, why are these wonderful mammals still being slaughtered?
Badgers are not just animals; they are an integral part of our ecosystem. They manage to survive despite so many obstacles, but this ongoing threat of culling makes their existence precarious without justification. Recent studies indicate that culling does not effectively control bovine tuberculosis (bTB) and alternates such as vaccination should be explored more thoroughly. The very fact that the government has acknowledged the inefficacy of the cull demands immediate action to revoke any active licenses, especially in regions like Cumbria.
According to a 2018 study released by the University of Exeter, badger vaccination offers a more humane and effective approach to managing bTB, Protecting these creatures is not just a legal obligation, but a moral one. Additionally, rabies and distemper vaccines have been used successfully in wildlife populations elsewhere, presenting a viable alternative to culling.
The persistence of these outdated licenses is a stark reminder of the disconnect between policy and science, a gap that needs closing urgently. It's essential for the health of our environment and livelihood of these badgers to focus on progressive and kind solutions.
We call upon the UK government and environmental agencies to act decisively. Revoke all remaining licenses for badger culling in Cumbria and commit to humane alternatives that respect both science and the creatures that have graced this land long before we did.
Please sign this petition to demand an end to unnecessary badger culls and hold our government accountable to their promises of preservation and protection.
