I've recently experienced the effects wrought by a deadly global pandemic that has shown us all how deeply we are connected to our environment - and how vital it is that we protect it.

Today, I am deeply pained to learn about the threatened deforestation of 400 acres of biodiversity-rich land owned by the University of Hyderabad. Not only does this land provide a habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna, it also plays an indisputable role in maintaining good air quality which is already under grave threat in many parts of India.

In 2020 alone, the loss of forest cover worldwide led to an estimated economic impact of $5-10 trillion (source: "The Global Economic Impact of Deforestation" published by the World Economic Forum, 2020). The figures themselves speak volumes about the economic toll we risk inflicting on ourselves through deforestation.

More significantly, these 400 acres of land serve as a 'carbon sink'; absorbing more carbon dioxide than they emit and thereby playing a decisive role in our ongoing fight against climate change. At a time when global carbon dioxide levels are at an unprecedented high, we simply cannot afford to lose more of these vital natural carbon sinks.
