STOP the approval of a cannabis dispensary in our village
The Issue
Brookfield is a peaceful community where children safely play outside, families stroll to nearby parks, and schools are central to the fabric of the neighborhood. This is precisely why it’s so concerning that our village board is considering approving a cannabis dispensary just a few blocks from our homes, and less than a stone's throw from Candy Cane Park, an ice cream shop, a preschool, SEG Middle School and Brook Park elementary school.
The proposed location is in a residential area, a place meant to nurture the young and support families, not to introduce risks that accompany high-trafficking businesses. The opening of a dispensary here isn't just an abstract threat; it means a real increase in traffic that will endanger our children who play in the streets and walk to parks and school. More vehicles and more strangers mean more hazards, and as parents, the safety of our kids is non-negotiable.
Moreover, studies have shown a correlation between the opening of cannabis dispensaries and an increase in local crime rates. Communities similar to ours have experienced thefts, disturbances, and other criminal activities spike around these businesses. Introducing such an element into our neighborhood would disrupt the peace and security we've worked so hard to maintain.
Beyond safety concerns, the presence of a dispensary in a residential area can lead to a devaluation of property. Prospective homebuyers consider such factors heavily, and placing a commercial enterprise of this nature at the heart of a community imposes consequences on each homeowner's investment. It’s unfair and unnecessary, especially when there are more appropriate areas for such businesses to operate.
We must speak up and urge our village board to prioritize the wellbeing of its residents over commercial interests. They should consider alternative locations for the cannabis dispensary, ones positioned away from family-centric areas, parks, and schools and in a commercial area .
Please join us in protecting our community's integrity, safety, value, reputation, and future. Stand with us by signing this petition to prevent the cannabis dispensary from being approved in our village's residential area. Let's ensure our voices are heard. Come to the Brookfield Village Board meeting on Monday January 12th at 6:30 pm!!!!
