Victory! Application to Remove Heritage Status of Beth Emanuel Revoked!

The owners of Beth Emanuel British Methodist Episcopal Church in London, Ont.,, one of Canada's oldest Black churches, have withdrawn their application to have the building's heritage status removed.

London city staff confirmed Tuesday  June 02 2026 that the application to remove the heritage status for  Beth Emanuel Church located at 430 Grey St. in SoHo has been withdrawn.

The owners had previously applied to the city to have the 150-year-old building's heritage designation removed, as CBC reported in April.

The yellow brick church has served as a place of gathering and worship for London's Black community, including many who fled slavery by way of the Underground Railroad.
