The Issue

Bell Canada has begun construction of an artificial intelligence data centre in the RM of Rosser, just outside of Winnipeg.

The effects of living in close proximity to a data centre can be detrimental, this specific data centre being predicted to use one one thousandth of Manitobas total power generation capacity, which is enough electricity to power thousands of homes. From Laura Cameron:  "Adding more data centres on top of that really sort of threatens our ability to electrify our basic needs."

In addition to the high power cost, data centres are reported to cause high amounts of noise pollution at infrasonic levels, which with prolonged exposure has been seen to affect physical and mental health, resulting in headaches and anxiety at best, and potentially seizures at worst.

Generative AI as a whole has been shown to reduce critical thinking skills, aid in declining literacy rates, and even cause serious mental conditions such as psychosis in certain individuals. The current stock market and economy relies heavily on generative AI, which is currently turning little to no profit, which could be grounds for an eventual economic collapse.

The province of Manitoba should not put into jeopardy the health and resources of its people in favour of the construction of this Data centre. The signees of this petition appeal to Bell Canada and Premier Wab Kinew to put a stop to this action.
