The Issue

Living in the heart of Vermillion County, Indiana, I have watched how our community thrive on its natural beauty, wildlife, and tight-knit relationships. This home is not just a location or a dot on the map to me; it is a place where countless memories have been made, friendships forged, and family bonds strengthened.

The prospect of constructing an AI data center here is unsettling. It's more than a mere physical transformation; it's a threat to the unique environment we hold dear. The potential impact on our local wildlife, already struggling against encroaching human development, could be catastrophic. These animals, from the smallest critters to the majestic bald eagles soaring above our landscapes, rely on the undisturbed spaces we currently offer.

Additionally, consider the climate implications. Data centers are notorious for their substantial energy requirements. The increased emissions will contribute negatively to our local air quality, exacerbating climate change impacts that Vermillion County is vulnerable to, given its rural and agriculturally driven economy.

Noise pollution is another serious concern. The constant hum of machinery doesn't align with the serene soundscape of our neighborhood, a soundtrack defined by the rustling of leaves, the symphony of wildlife, and the comforting silence that punctuates our days and nights.

Water conservation is equally critical. Data centers often consume vast amounts of water for cooling purposes. Such demand poses a dire risk to our local water resources—a precious necessity not only for our residents but also for our farmlands and ecosystems.

Finally, we must prioritize the health of my friends, family, and neighbors. The introduction of excessive noise, deteriorated air quality, polluted water and water scarcity poses direct threats to human health, ranging from increased stress levels, respiratory issues to even potential death.

For these reasons, I urge the decision-makers, developers, and local authorities to reconsider the construction of the AI data center in Vermillion County. Let's explore alternative locations that do not jeopardize our home or disrupt the harmony of our lives. Please join me in protecting what makes Vermillion County unique and precious.
