Stop the affordable House plan in Semiahmoo Town Centre
The Issue
White Rock and South Surrey are communities cherished for their tranquility and safe environment, offering a sanctuary for residents and particularly for senior citizens who rely on accessible healthcare. This peaceful setting is under threat from an affordable rental house plan proposed by BC Housing, the City of Surrey, and Fraser Health. The plan involves establishing a housing facility with additional substance-use and mental health services at Semiahmoo town centre, specifically located at 15238 19th Avenue and 1880 152nd Street.
Our local healthcare system is already operating at full capacity and will undoubtedly face increased pressure with the introduction of such a facility. The existing medical resources are limited and overburdened, threatening the quality of life and health services available to our senior citizens and other community members who depend heavily on these services.
While the necessity of affordable housing and mental health support is undeniable, the location chosen for this initiative is inappropriate due to the residential nature of the area and its predominantly elderly population. Many fear for the safety and wellbeing of our community, questioning the impact this housing development will have on local healthcare accessibility, potential property devaluation, and changes to the neighbourhood's character.
We urge BC Housing, the City of Surrey, and Fraser Health to reconsider their decision and explore alternative locations that would better accommodate such a facility without compromising our community's health resources and overall serenity. We recognize the value of providing support and housing for vulnerable populations, but it is vital to balance these needs with the community's capacity to support additional pressures on local infrastructure.
Stand with us in protecting the essence of White Rock and South Surrey. Please take action and sign the petition to voice your concern and encourage a more appropriate solution for all parties involved.
