STOP the 413 - FREE the 407

The Issue

We are a grassroots group in York Region that is concerned about the Ontario government budgeting and spending.  We are opposed to the GTA West ( Highway 413 ) proposal as it is redundant costly and highly damaging to the environment. The alternative exists in the 407ETR  ( Highway 407 ) that is running at a very low capacity.

Canadian Pension Plan Investments is a majority shareholder of the 407ETR. This petition is directed towards it's board ( CCPIB ) to open the Hwy 407ETR to subsidized commercial truck traffic. CPPIB is mandating their businesses upgrade their environmental work while at the same time are allowing for a major highway to be underutilized. This is called greenwashing and is not acceptable.

The idea of providing a toll subsidy for trucks on 407ETR during busy hours is being proposed as an alternative to building the GTA West ( Highway 413 ) expressway. An analysis by Transport Action Ontario shows that the costs of such a truck subsidy are less than half the costs of constructing and maintaining Highway 413. Furthermore, due to its better location, 407ETR would also be more useful to truckers, with commensurate benefits to air quality and climate change.
