The issue

As a hairdresser, I've encountered numerous clients with different stories, but nothing prepared me for the disturbing phone call I received, which mirrored incidents narrated by many women across Australia. For over two decades, a serial caller using aliases like Christine and Charmaine has been targeting salons and individuals, weaving a web of harassment that has left many of us feeling vulnerable and threatened.

Imagine receiving a call not knowing whether it’s a genuine appointment inquiry or one that will result in discomfort and fear. This caller's modus operandi has remained consistent over the years—she pretends to be a client, only to divert the conversation into inappropriate and unsettling territories. This is more than a nuisance; it's a deliberate invasion of privacy and safety.

Despite the countless reports filed with local authorities, there has been a disappointing lack of action. This pattern of harassment continues unchecked, affecting not just hairdressers but women in diverse sectors who pick up the phone unaware of the psychological distress awaiting them. The fear and anxiety instilled by this serial caller extend far beyond a single phone conversation; it lingers in our everyday lives, casting a shadow over our personal and professional interactions.

According to research on harassment and its impact, such experiences can lead to severe anxiety, depression, and a decrease in professional performance—a reality faced by thousands of victims across Australia, myself included. We need formal recognition of this issue by law enforcement and community leaders to stop this harassment cycle.

Our community is resilient and strong, but we cannot tackle this alone. We urge the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) and local law enforcement agencies to allocate resources and manpower specifically to identify and charge this serial caller. We call for the installation of a task force to expedite investigations surrounding such cases, ensuring swift responses and bringing the perpetrator to justice.

By stopping this harasser, we protect not just those presently targeted but prevent future instances of such unwanted interactions. Join me in demanding immediate, effective action. Let's raise our voices collectively and urge those in power to enforce stricter measures and provide the protection we rightfully deserve.

Please sign this petition to put an end to the 20-year reign of this serial caller's harassment, safeguarding our communities and especially our women from future abuse.
