The issue

The Pillans Road Bike Track in Pillans Point, Otumoetai was not just a dirt path with jumps and obstacles; it was a vibrant hub of community activity and connection. Every day, children as young as three, teenagers, and adults come together here to ride, build, and create. This is a space where young people learn invaluable life skills like teamwork, resilience, perseverance, and positive risk-taking.

However, this community space was destroyed WITHOUT ANY COMMUNITY CONSULTATION  by Tauranga City Council and announced plans to block the track by placing rocks, concrete, and bollards through it, depriving the community of a much used and loved recreational space.

The benefits of the bike track extend beyond mere recreation. It serves as an environment for children and adults to engage in physical activity, which is critical for mental and physical well-being. Especially in today's fast-paced and digital-focused world, the importance of having such a space where people can connect with nature and each other cannot be overstated.

We urge the Tauranga City Council to reconsider its decision and engage with local residents to explore alternative ways to address any concerns without dismantling the Pillans Road Bike Track. Solutions could include collaborative planning for maintenance, exploring liability concerns with local community groups, and even seeking grants or fundraising for necessary improvements.

Please help us keep this critical piece of our community intact. Sign this petition to show your support for saving the Pillans Road Bike Track and to ensure that it remains a space for learning, growth, and community unity.
