Stop Tallahassee's Effort to Destroy the Orange and Seminole County Rural Boundaries

The Issue

State legislators in Tallahassee have filed bills which would destroy Orange and Seminole County's Rural Boundaries.

Less than 6 months ago, 73% of Orange County residents voted to create their Rural Boundary and 83% of Seminole County residents voted to reinforce their Rural Boundary.  Orange and Seminole County residents determined that these Rural Boundaries are the ONLY way to limit urban sprawl, preserve rural areas, and contain public infrastructure costs.

Protecting our quality of life by promoting infill rather than sprawl may limit how many $millions developers make from their next project.  So in response, developers hired lobbyists who have found legislators who are willing to throw out the votes of Orange and Seminole County voters.

In Tallahassee, legislators have filed SB 1118 and HB 1209 which will DESTROY the work Orange and Seminole County's residents have done to create and preserve these Rural Boundaries by preempting our local ordinances.

With the revision that was made to the Senate Bill in Committee on 3/14/25, Orange County's Rural Boundary would be completely eliminated.  In Seminole County, the supermajority requirement that Seminole County voters just approved in November would also be eliminated.  In addition, developers in the Rural Boundary would no longer have to apply to the County for land use changes, but instead would simply apply to an administrative agency in Tallahassee.  The Tallahassee agency would be required to approve the change and there would be no public hearings.

Orange County's Rural Boundary would be instantly eliminated and Seminole County's Rural Boundary would be on a fast track to irrelevance.

It is absolutely reprehensible that developers and legislators in Tallahassee would attempt to undermine and preempt Orange and Seminole County residents' democratic choices.  We voted for these Rural Boundaries at the overwhelming numbers of 73% and 83% and have a right to home rule.  Tallahassee MUST honor the work we've done to ensure our communities grow smart, not disregard us to please the developer's lobbyists.

Please sign this petition to tell our State Senators and State Representatives to protect our Rural Boundaries by voting NO on SB 1118 and HB 1209
