West Sussex County Council has decided that Swiss Gardens Primary School will become a 3 form entry for the reception intake this year. This plan was only disclosed to parents at the school on Monday 18th April, due to the school finding out only shortly before. This coincided with admission application results that were sent out to prospective reception parents. The LEA felt it was not in their interest to open a parent consultation regarding this crucial decision despite it having an impact on our children’s education and well being and possibly parents first choice of school. What is of most concern is that the school is already at capacity with no playing field to call our own and with minimal hall and outdoor space. It has been confirmed that the school is certainly being considered to continue as a 3 form entry school in the coming years so the strain on school space and facilities is likely to increase. The LEA have not put forward any proposals regarding budgeting or building work and so we are left feeling anxious about the future of our children's school. This expansion will have an impact on all the children and teaching staff of the school in several ways: 1. Less outdoor and communal space per child which will affect learning and teaching, general well being and health and safety. 2. Lack of facilities and space to cater for these extra children will put an end to full school assemblies and most likely joint year group assembly or festive productions/ school outings. Outdoor play/ PE classes and sports days will need to be re-considered and timetabled putting a greater strain on these meaning curriculum enrichment subjects such as drama, music and cooking will be less accessible for pupils. School lunch and dining facilities will be overused meaning more children constrained to the classroom during eating. 3. It will put a strain on other resources and communal space such as the library/ books and other teaching/ learning resources. When 3 classes in the same year group are learning about the same topic, resources will be scarce.  4. The personal touch children and parents have enjoyed at Swiss to date will be in jeopardy with an increased pupil intake. Swiss Gardens Primary School was designed and built to be a 2 form entry school. West Sussex County Council has been aware of the influx of families into the area in recent years as well as the baby boom yet there appears to have been very little preparation into coming up with viable plans to deal with this problem.
