Petition updateStop supporting the cruel greyhound industrySpecsavers contacts Irish store after brand attached to greyhound race
Irish Council Against Blood SportsMullingar, Ireland
Aug 15, 2019

Specsavers has contacted one of its stores in Ireland after its brand name appeared in the title of a greyhound race.

ICABS brought to the company’s attention a “Specsavers S2” race at Dundalk stadium on 10th August and highlighted all the cruelty and killing involved in the nasty greyhound industry. We provided Specsavers with a link to the eye-opening “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running for their Lives” documentary which exposed the horrors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=setA7S8JHsE

We pointed out that, in addition to the thousands of greyhounds killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races, greyhounds also suffer and die at tracks. Dundalk stadium is one of the worst in Ireland for injuries and deaths. 110 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 47 were killed by a track vet over the past four years alone. Nationwide, there have been 1,559 race injuries and 506 track deaths in the same period.

Responding to our appeal to disassociate from greyhound racing, a representative from Specsavers’ UK Head Office stated: “We have investigated this matter and one of our stores sponsored a recent charity race meeting. The store agreed to sponsor the event because it was raising money for a charity with which they have a strong relationship. We have spoken to the store and asked them to reconsider any future activity.”

Following the shocking RTE documentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM - more and more companies are rejecting greyhound racing. These include Barry's Tea, FBD Insurance, Galway Crystal, Botanica International, Hyde Irish Whiskey, Tesco Ireland, Toyota Ireland, Electric Ireland, Applegreen and other companies.

GAA clubs, schools and charities are being urged to show compassion and stop fundraising at greyhound tracks. Such fundraisers are a major source of income for tracks - they take a significant commission on ticket sales and profit from gambling and food and drink sales on the night. Companies approached to sponsor races are asked to say NO and donate directly to the charity/sports club instead. This will not only be of greater benefit to the fundraising group but also avoid associating the company’s name with a cruel dog-killing industry which the Irish public wants ended.

Please join us in urging the Irish Government to stop ploughing millions of euros of taxpayers’ money into greyhound racing and instead redirect it to the sports clubs, hospitals, homeless charities, environmental groups and animal rescue centres crying out for funds.

URGENT ACTION ALERT

Say NO to the cruel greyhound industry - don't attend greyhound races or fundraisers/hen parties/office parties held at greyhound tracks

STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING

Since 2001, the Irish Government has paid out around a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money to greyhound racing, including €16.8 million for 2019. Following the shocking RTE Investigates revelations about cruelty and killing, it is time for these grants to be finally ended. Not a single cent more of public funds should end up in this shameful industry. Contact Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe now.
