RTE News has this afternoon broadcast shocking extracts from the “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives” programme which will be broadcast tonight at 9.35pm on RTE 1.

The news report outlines that the cruel greyhound industry in Ireland has been breeding "1,000% more pups than are needed for racing", resulting in an average of 6,000 dogs being killed every year. These dogs are destroyed because they are not quick enough to win.

It reveals that 30 knackeries were contacted by the RTE investigation team and asked if they put down greyhounds. Half of them said that they were not allowed to euthanise dogs - the other 15 said they would do it for between €10 and €35 per dog.

Secret telephone recordings reveal some of the sickening responses

- “We put them down and dispose of them”
- “It’s €20 each - make sure they have muzzles on them when they come to us”
- “We’ll put them down and take them from you and I’ll give you a receipt for them”

Undercover footage was also filmed at a knackery licensed by the Department of Agriculture - “in five days, four greyhounds were observed being dropped off, destroyed and disposed of”.

Don't miss "RTÉ Investigates: Greyhounds Running for Their Lives" this evening - Wednesday, 26 June- at 9.35pm on RTE1.
