There was “all sorts of trouble” at Shelbourne Park track on 14 March as two greyhounds collided at the first bend and were knocked to the ground.
The shocking collision between Hello Mossie and Smart Bolt occurred during the final of the “98FM Dublin Talks” race at the track - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ygn1OXCVvA&feature=youtu.be&t=10 At the end of the race, Hello Mossie was shown crossing the finishing line but there was no sign of Smart Bolt, with no finishing time recorded.
During what was a 98FM listeners' party at the track, Dublin Talks show presenters Adrian Kennedy & Jeremy Dixon were photographed presenting a trophy to the owner of a winning greyhound.
In an appeal to 98FM to stop sponsoring greyhound racing, ICABS highlighted that at least 146 greyhounds suffered injuries at Shelbourne Park and 36 were killed by a track vet over the past four years alone. This includes 41 injuries and 12 deaths last year.
At tracks around Ireland in the same period, 1,559 greyhounds suffered injuries and 506 were killed. The Irish Greyhound Board figures are based on “reported” injuries and deaths, suggesting that the actual number could be even higher. They do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere, or the thousands of greyhounds who go missing each year – presumed killed when found to be too slow to win races.
ACTION ALERT
Appeal to 98FM to show compassion for the dogs and stop holding its listeners party at a greyhound track where dogs suffer and die.
