Join the "Cork says NO to greyhound racing" protest outside Curraheen Park track in Cork, today Friday 7th September.
The protest - organised by Greyhound Awareness Cork - will run from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and coincides with a Ballincollig RFC "night at the dogs" fundraiser at the track.
"The general public are becoming more aware of the harsh realities of greyhound racing, cruelty, drugging, abuse, neglect, early death due to injury, wastage and exportation to countries without animal welfare laws," Greyhound Awareness Cork outlines in a statement. "Greyhounds are calm, affectionate, sweet, living, breathing creatures not inanimate objects so the way that the vast majority of them are treated in the greyhound industry is heart-breaking. Anybody who goes greyhound racing or supports/sponsors greyhound racing is responsible for the way greyhounds are treated."
Curraheen Park is one of the worst tracks in Ireland for greyhound injuries. In the past three and a half years alone, 83 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 30 were killed by a track vet. Nationwide, 1,369 greyhounds were reported injured at tracks and 438 were killed. This does not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere. Thousands more greyhounds go missing each year - presumed killed when found to be too slow to win races.

Don't attend or sponsor fundraisers at greyhound tracks. If you wish to support a club, make a direct donation and appeal to the fundraising committee to reject greyhound racing.
While sports clubs are forced to waste time fundraising, the cruel and crumbling greyhound industry receives massive government grants every year. Since 2001, nearly a quarter of a Billion euros of taxpayers' money has been handed over to the Irish Greyhound Board (including €16 million for 2017 and another €16 million for 2018). Urge Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe to end funding to the greyhound industry and instead direct the money to charities, animal rescue centres, sports clubs, health groups and other deserving causes. Email "Stop funding the cruel greyhound industry" to taoiseach@taoiseach.gov.ie, leo.varadkar@oireachtas.ie, paschal.donohoe@oireachtas.ie, minister@per.gov.ie
