Stop Sunderland City council turning Green Land on Allendale Road into Housing
The Issue
In 2024 the Labour government announced a plan to build 1.5 million new homes in England, a target many industry experts have said is unrealistic. They have given express permission for green belt land to be used.
Because of this, Sunderland City Council see the plans as a "green" light to accelerate the rapid development of green land throughout the city into more housing developments, having already been doing this for the last decade.
As part of this, they have revived previously rejected plans to build Gentoo homes on the green field on Allendale Road that feeds into Gilley Law, having already passed plans to build new housing on North Moor. Farringdon is a state which has beautiful green open spaces, but the council's plans will risk turning it into a concrete jungle, rolling back its quality of life.
On a practical level, new housing on Allendale Road, one of the main routes through Farringdon, will be a disaster. It will massively increase traffic and congestion. We must defend our green spaces and serve a democratic mandate to Sunderland City Council that these moves will come at a political cost.
