Stop Suffolk University from funding new AI Co-Major
The Issue
Suffolk University recently announced their plan to add an AI Co-Major to its curriculum. This post encourages students to “Keep your major. Add AI” but has received significant backlash from its students, with 500+ comments rejecting the idea.
Not only has the University decided to fund and promote the use of artificial intelligence in higher education, but they did so while making budget cuts to staffing as well as departments in arts and humanities. Last year, the school made two major rounds of staff layoffs totaling 65 positions, cutting 35 staff members in June 2025 followed by an additional 30 positions in October 2025. They also continue to raise tuition, as well as prices of food and materials.
It is not too late to correct this mistake and demand that Suffolk University redirects its curriculum to support the needs of students, and a more sustainable future that doesn’t rely on artificial intelligence. Those who sign this petition hope Suffolk listens to its students rather than doubling down on its mistake, and takes a step in the right direction.
