Elephants exposed to toxic waste are dying in Sri Lanka, but the authorities are playing it off as food poisoning. It was a global news sensation, but like any news, no changes have been made. Toxic leachate from these 379 open garbage dumps in the country is leaching into fresh water bodies, resulting in chronic idiopathic kidney disease among humans. The only recent change in Sri Lanka is the importation of garbage, specifically nuclear waste from other countries.

Sri Lankan political parties are involved in illegal trades including drug trafficking and they are using garbage trafficking as a new scheme to fill up their pockets. Improper sorting and disposal of garbage into open spaces close to wildlife reserves have attracted elephants to forage. Exposure to toxic nuclear and medical waste have killed herds of elephants.
