While we applaud Southwark's reduction in frequency of spraying last year, the council is still planning to continue to spray our homes, schools, and highways regularly. Despite widespread evidence that our wild soil, plants and insects, the base of the food chain, have been decimated by herbicide use, despite recent courtroom victories for the human health victims of glyphosate, Southwark is still deciding between spraying this soil biocide once or twice per year. Let's keep up the pressure to eliminate all regular use of pesticides.
As neighbouring boroughs such as Lambeth have shown, urban weeds can be managed through simple increased tolerance, hand-pulling, resident volunteer support, and minor spot application only as needed. Regularly scheduled, widespread spraying across the borough, even "only" once per year, is hugely detrimental to Southwark's nature recovery.
